Warm Fuzzies in the New Recruiting World

With the crazy pace of the market and increasing competition for the same requirements and resources, recruiters are under intense pressure to produce, produce, produce. This translates to hammering phone calls, metrics-driven management, and a "wham bam" (I'll leave out the rest) experience for both candidates and clients. The days of long, schmoozing conversations on the phone, meetings over coffee, and long-lasting relationships between recruiters and the people they place seem to be over. Is there room in the new recruiting world for warm fuzzies?

Sort of. I think there is a difference between warm fuzzies and empathy. From a business perspective, there is simply too much competition in the current marketplace for recruiters to spend lazy afternoons schmoozing on the phone about nothing. I am a firm believer, however, that empathy can drive results. True, it's a recruiter-eat-recruiter world out there, and the speed-driven fight for business is fierce. But in order to build loyalty among clients and candidates, ensure that recruiters have all of the information they need in order to find the right person, smoothly navigate the hiring process, close a deal well, keep it stuck closed, and make long-lasting matches for their candidates and clients, you have to work with empathy.
